Graminoids (Grasses, Sedges, Rushes) Identification for Wetlands and Wetland Delineators

Graminoids (Grasses, Sedges, Rushes) Identification for Wetlands and Wetland Delineators

This four day course was developed for wetland delineators and others needing to recognize and identify graminoids in wetlands, especially species likely to be seen in the field during wetland delineations.

In the lab participants will be introduced to sufficient plant terminology to enable them to use regional floristics keys and the internet to identify graminoid species. A waterproof field guide and USB drive of color, labeled images illustrating essential graminoid features and characteristics will be provided.

Field trips are anticipated to a fen, salt marsh, fringe marsh near a lake, and emergent marsh (Cheyenne Bottoms) in order to observe graminoid species commonly seen in wetlands and at wetland boundaries in the lower Midwest and Plains. Lists of graminoids seen at sites visited and in the region will be provided.
